KFH,K acquires more neurosurgery kit

KIGALI - King Faisal Hospital, Kigali (KFH,K) last week, received more equipment worth over Rwf 35 million for the Rwanda Neurosurgical Centre (RNC) from the Neurosurgery Department of Duke University in the United States. The equipment was handed over on behalf of the US varsity by Prof Michael Haglund. Duke University has been partnering with KFH,K in building capacity of Neurosurgical nurses, medical officers and in developing training programmes for neurosurgeons. The hi-tech equipment is comprised of two cervical spine sets; one anterior and one posterior; three lumber spine fusion sets, two pneumatic Anspach drills, two Mayfield head holders and books. In a statement, the coordinator of the Neurosurgical centre at KFH,K, Emmanuel Nkusi, said that the equipment will facilitate the neurosurgery team to boost the centre’s ability to carry out many operations in one day which was not possible before. “The equipment will help KFH,K to attend to more patients requiring these procedures. Referral cases abroad due to lack of equipment will soon stop,” Nkusi said. Juliet Mbabazi, the Acting CEO of KFH,K, thanked the government and other partners who have, support the centre since its establishment. Since the official opening of the Rwanda Neurosurgical Centre in July 2010, the hospital has received several donations from the government, and public and private companies such as RRA, RAMA, SSFR and Mutara Enterprises.
