After defeating champions APR Saturday (men)NUR 3-2 APR NATIONAL University of Rwanda (NUR) edged closer to their first league title in five years after Saturday’s hard fought win over reigning champions APR. The varsity side, which was playing in their back yard, seized the moment with a 3-2 set win. In a pulsating match that brought out the very best from the two clubs, NUR looked on course for a stunning straight sets win when they won the opening two sets (26-24, 25-23) only for APR to force the game into a decider after claiming the third and fourth sets (25-23, 26-24). But the varsity side, buoyed by their fans, sealed what could now be a crucial win after a 15-12 victory in the deciding set to spark off wild jubilations from the home crowd. NUR coach Fidele Nyirimana praised his team’s mental strength and never say die attitude. “My players showed very good mental strength today. They battled APR all the way and lifted themselves up even when APR seemed to be on top,” Nyirimana excitedly said. The win moved NUR to 49, one clear of APR, who are chasing for an unprecedented fourth successive title. NUR will be crowned champions if they beat Gisenyi College in their final league game. Ends
