MTN slashes SMS charges

As competition in the telecom industry continues to stiffen, MTN Rwanda, the largest mobile operator by market share has slashed Short Message Services (SMS) on both On-net and Off-net network by 66.6 percent and 52.8 percent respectively. Under the new tariffs, more than 2 million MTN subscribers will be able to send a text message for as low as Rwf10 on On-net from Rwf30 and Rwf25 Off-net from Rwf53. The companys Senior Marketing Officer, Yvonne Makoro, said that the new tariff is not permanent but a promotion package. As competition grows, operators are fighting to retain and attract more subscribers on their networks. Currently, MTN is also running a promotion whereby subscribers are able to get a 70 percent discount on international calls. The calls include USA, Canada, China and India. Rwandatel charges Rwf 10 On-net and Rwf 15 Off-net per SMS; while Tigo is charging Rwf 3 On-net and Rwf 25 Off-net. Rwanda Utilities Regulatory Agency (RURA) is seeking to issue a fourth licence by the end of this year. Ends
