Two rugby clubs from Burundi have confirmed their participation in next month’s Buffalo Sevens aside rugby tournament. According to the 2005 league champions ‘Remera Buffalos’ who are also the event organizers, Hyenas and Urumuri rugby clubs have confirmed their participation in the one-day tournament that will be rolling into its second edition. “Hyenas and Urumuri have confirmed their participation taking the club tally to eleven,” Buffalo’s Gerard Nsenga revealed. Besides Hyena and Urumuri, nine local clubs have also lined up for the tournament.Buffalo has lined up two sides; Buffalo A and Buffalo B, Gorillas, Lions des Far, Sharks, Simba, Puma, UNR Grizzles and a military side based in Gikongoro. Although the venue is yet to be confirmed, the tournament has been scheduled for February 9. It is said that the club is targeting the School of Finance and Banking (SFB) grounds or the Red Cross grounds in Kacyiru. “We are mainly targeting SFB because we want to promote the sport in the institution. We want to kill two birds with one stone; on top of staging the tournament at SFB, we shall also use the event to promote the sport in the institution,” Nsenga indicated. The sevens tournament will be preceded by an U-14 tournament between two sides; Kigali and Gitarama. In last year’s premier edition that was open to only local clubs, Lions des far emerged as champions with Buffalos and Gorillas finishing second and third respectively.Meanwhile, details about last year’s league champions are not yet clear as the league is still pending.Ends
