GCAP asseses 2015 MDGs at Rwamagana hospital

RWAMAGANA - The Global Call for Action against Poverty (GCAP), yesterday, visited Rwamagana hospital, in a bid to assess the progress of the Millennium Development Goals towards the 2015 deadline. A GCAP official later donated material and equipment to patients at the hospital, worth Rwf. 350.000.The MDGs that GCAP primarily focused on mainly included; MDGs four, five and six. Hon. Pierre Claver Rwaka, said that the one-week campaign is to enlighten the population on the significance of the MDGs. He said that Rwandans have got to contextualize the 8 MDGs, as part of their daily lives. The legislator emphasized that the MDGs should be owned by the people if Rwanda is to meet the target. “We are assessing the reduction of child mortality, improvement of maternal health, combating HIV/AID, malaria, etc.” “It is part of my job as an MP to sensitize the people on what makes their lives: The MDGs.” Jean Claude Ndagijimana, Director of Rwamagana hospital, said that there is significant improvement of general healthcare in the district. He added that infant and maternal mortality rates have drastically dropped across the district.“The maternal mortality rate has dropped from 30 to 5.8%...this is an astonishing drop. We however need a hand from all stakeholders so that we achieve this at the maximum level possible,” he said. Antoine Niyitegeka, in charge of GCAP, reiterated the importance of a long campaign aimed at achieving the MDGs. “Mobilization is very crucial in creating awareness and ensuring maximum achievement of the MDGs,” he said.GCAP Rwanda was set up in 2006 as a campaign to accelerate the MDGs.
