MCC has strengthened justice sector - official

The Justice sector has improved tremendously as a result of the Rwanda Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) Threshold Program that started early this year, officials say. According to Yves Sibo Gahizi of the Institute of Legal Practice and Development (ILPD) in Nyanza, one of the beneficiaries of the programme, the capacity of the judges, prosecutors and lawyers has since improved. “MCC has organised trainings of trainers for judges, prosecutors and lawyers at the institute,” he said.He added that ILPD trainers and Heads of modules have been trained in teaching methodology and curriculum development and this has helped to improve the quality of teaching within the Institute. “The programme is making a great impact in the justice sector, for example, the training in judgment writing is very impressive and there is no doubt that this new way of writing will improve the quality of judgments in Rwanda,” he underscored. “The quality of the ILPD Diploma in Legal Practice (DLP) and many short courses offered by the institute to a wide range of legal professionals has also been strengthened”.He noted that MCC has organized training in Bill drafting, intended for the Ministry of Justice’s drafters, which is scheduled to take place next year. The three-year program supports the Rwandan government’s efforts to strengthen civic participation, promote civil liberties and improve the judicial system and justice sector. It is being implemented by Chemonics, an international development consulting firm. MCC Threshold Country Program is managed by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). Ends
