Rwanda Energy Group (REG) Volleyball Club were crowned champions of the just-concluded men’s national volleyball league on Sunday evening, January 22, despite losing 3-1 to rivals Gisagara VC during the last game of the eighth and final phase of the league. The game took place at Kimisagara Gymnasium in Nyarugenge District. REG came into the match as sure champions, since they had outperformed their title rivals during the first seven rounds of the competition, and were thus too far for second-placed Gisagara VC to catch during the last phase that took place over the weekend. During the game, local giants Gisagara won the first set 25-20, but REG bounced back to win the second one 25-17. Gisagara won the last two sets on 25-18 and 29-27, to take the game 3:1. REG took home the trophy and a cash prize of Rwf2,000,000, while runners-up Gisagara took home Rwf1,500,000. APR, who finished third, were rewarded Rwf1,000,000. In the women's category, APR WVC won the title and were given the trophy accompanied by a cash prize of Rwf2,000,000. Forefront VC, who emerged first runners-up on their first appearance in the league, took home Rwf1,500,000 while third-placed Rwanda Revenue Authority (RRA) were awarded Rwf1,000,000.
