New NURSU leaders sworn-in

HUYE - Students, staff and administration of the National University of Rwanda turned up for the swearing-in ceremony of the incoming NUR Students Union (NURSU) executive committee this Thursday in the campus’ main auditorium. Opening the ceremony, NUR Rector, Prof. Silas Lwakabamba expressed his gratitude to the outgoing committee for the achievements it realised and pledged continued collaboration with the new one. “We are ready to work hand-in-hand to make the institution suitable and more friendly, and to keep it efficient and effective,” Lwakabamba said. As revealed by Medard Runyange, the chairperson of the University’s electoral commission and dean of students, the elections took place after a delay of nearly four months. Given the NURSU constitution, he said, the election should be held in April. However, Runyange explained, it was during the national commemoration week and later the examination period. He further added that the constitution would be amended to avoid any future delays. “The electoral commission is aware of this problem and will ensure the revision of the fourteenth article of this constitution related to the election period.” Hildebrand Niyomungeri, the new guild president who won the election with a landslide, promised to promote students’ welfare, better service delivery and quality education at the university. “The time has come to work with determination and accountability towards advocacy of NURSU community and success,” he said.
