MUSANZE - 30 pharmacists and nurses attached to various health centres and hospitals of Gisenyi and Shyira, have completed training on the management of drugs, medical equipment and contraceptives. The two-day training which was organized by UNFPA, in partnership with Gisenyi Hospital, aimed at equipping the pharmacists with better ways of drug maintenance/management, especially consumable drugs. According to Dr. Patrice Karumugabo, the Director of Gisenyi Hospital, only the main hospitals have trained pharmacists while the rest are nurses handed with the responsibility of drug management. Only 3 out of 30 trainees are trained pharmacists while the rest are nurses. “Drugs are the heart of all health centres, that is why nurses need to be equipped with knowledge of proper handling, and contraceptives use,’’ Dr Karumugabo said. Dr. Alphonse Munyakazi, from UNFPA, said that regular training in regards to proper handling of drugs and equipment is paramount in ensuring proper treatment, good service delivery and disease control.
