MARIE Claudine Iradukunda had little to offer as she failed to beat the qualification time in yesterday’s 50m free style heat at the on-going Singapore Youth Olympic Games. Iradukunda, who competed in the third heat of the day, struggled to reach the end of the pool after using 39.62seconds, almost ten seconds off the pace. The heat was won by Bahamas’ Bria Deveaux (28.27) while Fablola Espinoza and Celeste Brown followed in second and third place. Tanzania’s Mohammed Mariam clocked 30.51 to finish 4th while Albania’s Jani Reli rounded off the top five slots after using 30.99 seconds. Iradukunda now joins long distance athletes Potien Ntawuyirushintege and Jacqueline Murekatete in the spectators’ stand. On Tuesday, the pair hit the exit after failing to impress in the 3000m race. In particular, Murekatete had herself to blame after getting disqualified for straying from her lane. The country’s faint hopes of a medal now rest on Matusi Haziza’s shoulders. The pugilist will be in action tomorrow at the International Convention Centre. Ends
