Genocide survivors attacked

MUHANGA - Gasenyi Genocide survivors are seeking security from the government after stones were hurled at their houses at 1 AM on Saturday night. Survivors say that similar attacks have happened in the same settlement and this attack has a similar hallmark as the previous one which happened in July last year. “Stones were hurled at our houses, at 1a.m just like it was last year. There was no rescue from local authorities and residents during the attack which left us worried,” Ramathan Ngoga, said on behalf of the survivors’ group.None of the survivors was injured in the course of the regrettable act and they have not been able to identify any suspects among the neighbours in Gasharo village.Ngoga, who is also the head of the survivors’ village, revealed that this is the fifth attack in two years. “This incident is a kind of intimidation, and we are asking the government to intervene. We need security.” Muhanga police told this reporter that the security of survivors is assured and a team of police officers and district officials will address the matter and find the suspects. Last year, on July 5, six houses were stoned, flower gardens uprooted, and one survivor, identified as Adrian Nsabimana was attacked and injured by some residents in Gasenyi trading centre. Survivors have expressed disappointment over lack of action against some suspects by local authorities, and that this has been a major cause of the continued attacks. Ends
