$7m to fight effects of climate change

$7m has been earmarked for two projects aimed at protecting the population from the negative impact of climate change. The projects, which will put in place measures for climate change mitigation and adaptation, will initially focus on the Western Province, particularly Nyabihu District. The district has in the past been devastated by floods mainly attributed to the deforestation of Gishwati forest. One of the projects will be funded by the Japanese government at a cost of $3m and the other by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) who have earmarked $4m. Speaking at the launch of the projects, the Japanese Ambassador to Rwanda, Kunio Hatanaka, said that his country is committed to work with the government in the fight against climate change, as well as the general development of the country. The projects will also see disaster preparedness mechanisms and early warning systems set up in flood-prone areas. The Director General of Rwanda Environment Management Authority (REMA), Rose Mukankomeje assured the donors that the funds will be put to proper use. Ends
