120 houses for Genocide survivors

SOUTHERN PROVINCE HUYE — District has finalised arrangements to build 120 houses for vulnerable Genocide survivors, using labour from Gonocide convicts; serving their sentences under community work (TIG), an official has said. The district TIG coordinator, Jean Paul Murenzi, said that there are currently over 2000 convicts engaged in different activities for the community; among them building for vulnerable Genocide survivors and crop growing. In the next three months, we have lined up a number of activities including the construction of 120 houses in different Sectors of the District and construct roads in Cyarwa and Taba, using stones that will be got from Mwendo hills in Rwaniro Sector, said Murenzi. Many others will make roofing tiles in Simbi and Maraba Sectors for the vulnerable in our communities, he added. The convicts have so far constructed five-kilometer road network in Maraba Sector and repaired other 70 Km across the district. We have set up 56 sites that accommodate TIG convicts. They are helping communities cultivate 380 hectares of cassava in different Sectors of the district. They are also helping in the growing of coffee trees on 130 hectares of land, said Murenzi. He observed that the convicts have learnt the importance of TIG. Some were not well conversant with the whole idea of TIG but after a few seminars they have realized that it is the process through which; they can contribute to rebuilding what they destroyed and also build the spirit of unity and reconciliation in their communities, said Murenzi.Ends
