The seeming notion that a fairer (lighter) complexion will improve one’s social and economic status quo or the desire to have an even complexion, the use of skin lightening creams is on the increase. A great number of lightening crèmes contain mercury derivatives, hydroquinone and tropical steroids, yet these chemicals damage the skin. Effects of mercury based products include rashes, skin irritation and changes to the skin texture with its dangers. Several people had different views on the issue. Nathan Niweshuti (Student) The lightening crèmes should be banned since they tend to affect the natural skin. The chemicals tend to affect the person in the later stages. Caroline Mbabazi (Hair dresser) It depends on what one wants. Ladies always want to look their best no matter the consequences. Also, some of these crèmes blend well with some skin textures without causing any harm. Fred Mugabo (Parent) These crèmes should be discouraged since they lead to complicated infections that at times take time to heal or cause permanent damage. Belinda Uwase (Cashier) Diseases such as cancer are as a result of using dangerous crèmes hence should be proscribed. Benjamin Ntare (Businessman) I do blame the advertising agencies since they tend to promote these products without informing them about the dangers. The companies aim at making profits.
