One of the children involved in a school bus accident on Monday morning passed on later that evening, the management of Path To Success school confirmed. The child, identified as Kenny Mugabo, was one of the hospitalised 27 people who were involved in the accident. “He is the one that was in critical condition. It has just happened and I am with the family,” Reverend Gaby Opare, the school’s principal, said in a telephone interview with The New Times at around 11p.m. ALSO READ: President Kagame consoles children involved in bus accident A medical source said he suffered a fatal injury to the inferior vena cava, a large vein that carries the deoxygenated blood from the lower and middle body to the heart. The condition in general is called Blunt abdominal trauma, or injury to abdominal organs. This reportedly caused excessive bleeding and injury to the liver. The child died from Inferior vena cava (IVC) rupture. Earlier on Monday, officials at the University Teaching Hospital of Kigali (CHUK), said one of the 17 people, who were admitted, including the driver and teacher, was in critical condition and needed surgery. The New Times could not get official confirmation from the CHUK about the passing of Mugabo. Nyarugenge District hospital received one child, who sustained minor injuries from the accident. The child was discharged. ALSO READ: Police cautions teachers, parents over school bus drivers The children were on their way to school on a bus when the accident happened in Rebero area, Nyenyeri cell, in Kigarama Sector, Kicukiro District. The bus was coming down a steep road in Rebero when it crashed into a nearby forested area a few kilometres from the school. The cause of the accident is yet to be officially established however, some sources have blamed it on the bus losing its braking system.
