Schools honour Genocide victims

STUDENTS of FAWE Girls and Riviera Secondary School on Friday paid a visit to Nyanza Memorial Centre, Kicukiro district to honour victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. Naphtali Ahishakiye, head of the Memory and Documentation Department in IBUKA, told the students that “The interahamwe gained easy access and killed people after the UN peace keepers abandoned them claiming their mission was over.” He urged the students to stand at the forefront of fighting the Genocide ideology based on its effects to the country’s development. Over 4,000 bodies are laid at the Centre and according to the official, these were people from around Kicukiro who had sought protection from the UN peace keepers at the security base former ETO. Meanwhile, students later paid a visit to Urwibutso Association in Kabuga, Gasabo district where they donated food stuffs and scholastic materials worth Rwf 400,000. According to Jimmy Bizimungu, head of the Music, Dance and Drama (MDD) department at Riviera, the donation is aimed at incorporating in the students the spirit of utilizing talents to help the needy. “The students’ donation is a collection from music and dance concerts the two schools organized to help orphans,” Bizimungu said. According to the Director of Urwibutso, Telesphore Murenzi, the association is composed of about 100 survivors of the Genocide. Ends
