NEC sensitizes city residents on elections

The National Electoral Commission (NEC) has called upon residents of Kigali City to consult the voters’ register to ensure that their names are correctly written to avoid missing out on the forthcoming presidential elections slated for August 9. The call was made yesterday by Felicien Kagisha, the NEC official in charge of elections in Kigali City while speaking to various residents who largely composed of business operators around the city. The electoral body recently extended the registration process for Kigali City residents by giving them until Sunday to have turned up for updating their lists, a process that was concluded in other parts of the country on June 30. “As we get closer to the presidential elections, I advise you to ensure that there are no omissions on your names...you should also massively participate in the polls because this is something that needs participation from every Rwandan,” Kagisha said. He also briefed them on various issues concerning civic education and asked them to maintain total discipline and security during and after the elections. NEC officials also distributed guide books to the residents, containing the electoral calendar. Kagisha said that the targeted residents for this particular meeting are those who normally don’t attend NEC meetings due to their tight business schedules. He said that some NEC employees and volunteers in the Kigali City have now embarked on house to house campaign checking the names of residents on the voters list in order to correct mistakes and encouraging them to participate in the elections.
