The origin of the world cup

Rimet was inspired by the success of the 1924 Olympic Football Tournament held in Paris, and was therefore, the driving force behind the FIFA World Cup’s establishment in 1930. With this in mind, have you ever wondered what actions were implemented or which individual initiated the creation of this phenomenal football event? As we enjoy this defining moment in history- with the world cup being held in Africa for the very first time, let us take a look into the history of the FIFA World Cup championships and in particular, the individual who was responsible for initiating it into becoming a highly celebrated and captivating football event. Jules Rimet- a French man born in 1873, was also known as the father of the world cup because he was the man behind the shaping of the tournament. He was the third man to hold the FIFA president title from 1921 to 1954. Rimet was inspired by the success of the 1924 Olympic Football Tournament held in Paris, and was therefore, the driving force behind the FIFA World Cup’s establishment in 1930. Uruguay was chosen to host this first championship mainly to honour their achievements in sports for successfully retaining their football title at the 1928 Summer Olympics. Thirteen teams participated in this first World Cup tournament, Uruguay made their way to the finals and defeated Argentina 4–2 in front of a crowd of 93,000 people. By doing so they became the first nation to win a World Cup. Since this first World Cup, every four years the world is united in the spirit of football.
