Editor, I was totally dumbfounded to find out that the Swiss had beaten the much fancied Spanish team in the World Cup group phase. I mean, who would have ever thought that a team with the talent of Spain could actually lose to a Swiss team without a single well known player, save perhaps Philip Senderos (formally of Arsenal and AC Milan)? This FIFA World Cup has certainly thrown some banana skins our way. I mean, who would have expected to see Japan beat Africa’s top ranked team, Cameroon? Or see Brazil struggle to beat North Korea by just one goal? Or see Nigeria give Argentina a fright? All this suggests that global football standards are rising and now there aren’t any teams that are ‘weak’. It seems that every team is a ‘dark horse’ able to beat a tournament favourite if it’s not careful. I shall watch England versus Algeria with interest. While I will support the Three Lions, as the English team is known, I noticed that Algeria wasn’t the kind of team that will just roll over and die. It shall fight for everything. As will all teams, as Spain found out the hard way. Remera
