Police awards best students

Rwanda National Police yesterday awarded 77 best students from several schools in the country who excelled in various competitions during the just-concluded Police Sports Week. The event held at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) headquarters in Kacyiru, was presided over by Dr Mathias Harebamungu, the State Minister for Primary and Secondary Education. Three best students at national level who won in the Poetry/Essay writing category are Daniel Turikumwe (English), Anastase Dushimimana (French) and Marcel Bizumuremyi (Kinyarwanda). The trio, all from Muhanga District, each walked away with Rwf 130,000, a shopping voucher for Simba Supermarket, a TIGO mobile phone and Rwf 10,000 worth of airtime. All the prizes were donated by Tigo. The essay competitions focused on getting feedbacks from the students on the police’s performance and how it can do better, and to mobilize them to effectively contribute to the force’s duty of maintaining law and order. In the athletics category, 14 students were awarded Tigo handsets and Rwf 5, 000 worth of airtime while the best two, Clementine Nyiraguhirwa and Jean Baptiste Semukeka, were given gold medals, a mobile phone and Rwf 20,000 worth of airtime. Also awarded are three handball teams, Karate and 69 best performers at the district level all who received handsets and shopping vouchers totalling Rwf 680,000. Harebamungu who commended the police for engaging the students in these activities, appealed to students to act as ambassadors of the National Police wherever they will be, which he said, will contribute to national security. “The education and sports you are enjoying now would not be there if there was no security…and ensuring security in not only the work of police, but all Rwandans,” Harebamungu said. The Commissioner General of Police, Emmanuel Gasana, said that the sports week was successful, observing that; “where there is security development is possible.” He called upon all Rwandans to be part of the force’s celebrations to mark its 10th anniversary scheduled for June 16. Also present at the function was the Sports and Culture Minister, Joseph Habineza. Ends
