NGO donates Rwf14m to Gisimba Memorial Centre

KIGALI - GISIMBA Memorial Centre (GMC) in Nyamirambo, a home to about 150 orphans, Friday received over Rwf 14 million from Women for Women International (WFWI) to help the orphanage establish a poultry project dabbed “an-egg-per-child.” According to WFWI Country Director, Berra Kabarungi, the idea came after the organization realized the need to help the orphanage because of the difficulties its administrators face in taking care of such a big number. “The story of this orphanage is touching that’s why we came up with the help,” Kabarungi said. She added that an-egg-per-child is a project which is aimed at improving the children’s health. The Director of the Orphanage, Jean Ndayishimiye, appreciated the gesture saying the donation will be the first step of a project which will in future be diversified. “We shall start with poultry, but we also plan to rear rabbits, goats and pigs which will also act as income generating activities for the orphanages,” Ndayishimiye said. “This will also help us in catering for some economic demands for our children including paying school fees and buying scholastic materials.” Ndayishimiye also pointed out that this will mark the first project the orphanage implements as an income generator. He added that the orphanage entirely depends on support from the government, donations from various organizations both local and international, as well as well-wishers. Ends
