Kenyan athletes flock Kigali

Today 5km Race (Children) Tomorrow 5km race for fun (Adults)Wheel Chair race (Disabled)-5km Full Marathon-42 kmHalf Marathon-21KmTeam relay- 4*10.5km WITH over 100 Kenyans flying in for the 6th Kigali International Marathon, it is living proof that Kenya has not lost its love for the sport. Kenya’s contingent is led by 2008 winner Jacob Kendagor, Daniel Tanui, Daniel Kiplimo Sammy Kipruto, Kipkemboi Kipsang and David Tuwe while Rwanda, which has fielded ten athletes, will be spearheaded by Sylvain Rukundo. Tanzania has registered 19 athletes, Ethiopia has fielded four athletes while Burundi and DRC have entered a combined 12 athletes. Uganda is represented by Simon Rugut Kipngetich. On top of the half and full marathon, athletes will also compete in the team relay category, 5km run for fun race as well as a 5Km Wheel chair race for the disabled. With over Rwf20.3m to be dished out in prize money, the full and half marathon winners in both categories will pocket Rwf1.4m. The national athletics federation has also staked an extra Rwf579, 000 for any Rwandan who can rewrite history by winning the event. Last year, Kenya’s Tabut Benjamin Kipkosgei coasted to the full marathon title after clocking 2 hours, 21 minutes and 38 seconds, while Bryton Banuelia of Tanzania set a new record in the women’s fray after clocking 2 hours, 47minutes and 49 seconds. The Sports Ministry stands out as the event’s key sponsors after splashing Rwf50m. Ends
