FinalPrimiero 61-53 PetroAPR basketball club will be fairly impressed with their debut appearance at the just concluded Fiba-Africa Club Championships held in the Angolan capital Luanda. The zone five champions finished sixth out of the twelve clubs that took participated in the 22nd edition of the African club championship, which was won by Angola’s Primiero de Agosto in a bruising finale against arch-rivals and defending champions Petro Atletico in Luanda’s Cidadela Pavilion on Sunday. Primiero who lost to Petro 71-76 in the final of the 2006 edition in Lagos, Nigeria showed lots of determination to win the 2007 title 61-53. Primiero took a comprehensive lead in the first three quarters 19-17, 14-08 and 14-12 to put the game beyond Petro’s reach. And although Petro came back strong in the fourth quarter with a 16-14 lead, it was far from their target score. The victory made it three for Primiero who also boast of titles in 2002 and 2004.After the victory, Primiero’s coach Jaime Covilha attributed the victory to the investments that had been done by the club management. Meanwhile, having been ejected in the quarterfinals by Abidjan Basketball Club, APR beat DR. Congo’s BC Onatra 64-41 but lost 74-93 to Nigeria’s Niger Potters to finish sixth. Niger Potters claimed fifth spot.In the other classification games, ABC silenced Interclube 60-56 to finish third. DR.
