UN Deputy S.G to participate in One Million Women March

KIGALI - THE United Nations’ Deputy Secretary-General, Asha-Rose Migiro will participate in the One Million Women March that will take place across the country today. This was revealed yesterday by Senator Aloisia Inyumba.Inyumba said that several other women from several countries will join the march. “They are expected to arrive tonight and we expect to be with them in the march that will begin from parliament buildings to the Amahoro National Stadium,” Inyumba said. The march which is part of demonstrations to highlight the achievements of the country, especially in areas of gender and women promotion, will attract gender and women rights activists from all over the world. Kigali City vice Mayor in charge of Social Affairs, Jeanne d’Arc Gakuba, said that there is a lot of achievements to celebrate in the past 16 years in the development of women and gender equality. “We will have a one hour walk to be followed by another hour of discussions in various issues. We shall be analysing what we have achieved, and how we can strengthen what we have attained so far and how we can accelerate what have not been able to do,” Gakuba told The Sunday Times yesterday. She added that at least 150 guests are expected to attend a two-day conference which will take place on Monday and Tuesday. The conference is expected to discuss the “Role of Leadership in Promoting Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment” focusing on governance, peace, justice and security topics. Citing numerous women achievements in the country, Gakuba said that gender is a great tool in development. She underscored that women in Rwanda have managed to secure a platform to fight against all sorts of discriminations against women in all sectors because of the political will. Gakuba added that women in Rwanda have successfully acquired a bigger percentage in several decision making positions. Not only are women in various decision making positions, Gakuba said that even laws that protect women have been passed among other several achievements. Ends
