Green Hills students donate to orphans

KAMONYI – Thirty children living with disabilities at the Kamonyi Rehabilitation centre on Wednesday received Rwf800,000 donated by Grade 12 students of Green Hills Academy. The donation, which is part of the students’ out reach programme, was handed over by the school’s assistant head teacher, Gaspard Kagenza. The money was raised from students entertainment activities held at the school premises in March, according to a press release issued by the Kigali based school. Kagenza, who led the recipient school’s entourage, said the donor students have been supporting the orphanage for the past three years. “This act of charity orients students to deal with problems facing the society in future,” Kagenza said. Norbert Musana, a student’s representative from Green Hills Academy, said that the event was a learning experience for students from both institutions. “When I see the children living with disability, I feel compelled to help and share my blessings with vulnerable people. This should continue even when I become a leader,” Musana said. Sister Donatila Mukarubayiza, the director of the orphanage, said that the support would benefit over 280 children with disability. “The donor students have shown through this gesture the connection between education and being mindful of the less fortunate within society. We are grateful for their parents and teachers for enabling them to reach out to needy ones,” she said. The students have previously helped the orphanage to cultivate gardens and also donated a cow which provides milk and manure to the recipients, Mukarubayiza added. The function was also attended by parents and local leaders of Gacurabwenge sector. Ends
