You can’t be jobless if you’re equipped with various skills, like makeup, according to Nadine Umukundwa, a professional makeup artist and founder of Mio Beauty. She notes that if one establishes and markets their expertise to the target audience, they can earn from the make-up profession, as the more clients, the more money. The make-up professional believes that it is high time young people took short courses in makeup, hairdressing, and others so that they can make side incomes because these are services that people need on a daily basis. The youngster believes that if younger people opt for make-up courses, and other practical skills than waiting for white-collar jobs, the rate of unemployment would be lessened in Rwanda. For her, the mentality that make-up isn’t a decent job, is leaving many people poor. Recently, Umukundwa posted a poster on her Instagram page with details of her make-up classes, and she was mind blown by the number of people that were fascinated to partake in the short course. “Some of the people that contacted me immediately were Impact Hope Rwanda (an organisation that supports refugee youth in Rwanda by empowering them through Christian education and life-skills training) whom we collaborated to offer the make-up training to the youth. The course that is expected to take two weeks is still ongoing. Seeing that I can share my expertise with young people is something that enthuses me,” she explains. The makeup expert stresses that the course is aimed to train students to master important techniques that professional makeup artists use to create contemporary looks in their everyday life. She carries on that after completing the course, students will be able to enhance their own or other people’s beautiful features, know how to apply makeup on different skin types, and express themselves creatively. The Mio Beauty CEO looks forward to continuing mentoring learners, and offering them the necessary guidance and assistance for those planning to start makeup careers. She further notes that students won’t only have the experience, but will also be assisted to expose their work to the public, and form their own brands. “I created my brand not only to earn from it, but to also impact society by inspiring and motivating youth to enroll in a makeup program, enjoy learning something new, and be able to use the skills to earn a living. This is a business that doesn’t require much capital to start,” she states. Umukundwa, highlights that she is looking forward to providing a platform, and help youngsters expose themselves to the public, and empower them to apply every skill they have learned. The makeup artist stresses that the beauty industry is amazingly growing and receiving recognition on the market influenced by the civilisation in our society. For her, makeup allows people to feel confident, and compliments their appearances and personalities. She carries on that makeup allows people to cover their skin concerns that may cause insecurity. During her trainings, she explains that she teaches her students to communicate appropriately with the clients and make them feel comfortable, and remind them that the outcome of the makeup will be awesome. In case of mistakes, she encourages them to highlight it to the customer and assure them that they can be rectified as mistakes are common, and overall, making sure that they create something unique, not copying what they see online. She expounds that she usually takes her students through the basics tips first, such as applying foundation, contouring, shaping the eyebrows, perfecting the lip color, and mostly, caring for the face.
