Uganda -$10000(Frw.5.56 millions) DAR ES SALAAM - Rwanda lost to Sudan in yesterday’s Cecafa final to bag $ 20,000.Sudan won their second Cecafa Cup title after defeating Rwanda 4-2 on penalty shoot-out after the ninety minutes ended when the two teams were all tied at 2-2. Balla Gabir, Abdelhamid Ibrahim, Nasrdin Omer and keeper Akram Elhadi Salim converted for Sudan while Ismail Nshutinamagara and Elias Ntaganda missed for Rwanda. Only Manfred Kizito and Olivier Karekezi converted for the Amavubi. Both Rwanda and Sudan were gunning for a second Cecafa title, Rwanda won the title in 1999 while Sudan last won the title twenty seven years ago. Rwanda dominated the extra time as Bokota missed another clear chance as his header went wide. Despite its dominance Rwanda failed to convert its chances, Elias Ntaganda was another culprit when he failed to convert a Oliver Karekezi cross in the dying minutes of extra time. Full time had ended in a 2-all draw as both teams failed utilize the numerous goal scoring opportunities. Haruna Niyonzima pulled one goal back for Rwanda on the 47th minute before substitute Abedi Mulenda equalized. Tournament’s top scorer with six goals Abdelhamid Amarria’s header had put Sudan ahead on the 23rd minute of the first half before Modather Eltaab’s goal seemed to put the game beyond Rwanda’s reach in the first minute of the second half. The first half was not successful for Amavubi Stars as they failed to capitalize on three vital goal scoring opportunities; Bokota, Mafisango and Karekezi failed to convert the scoring opportunities which would have taken the game beyond Sudan’s reach. Coach Josip Kuze made a wonderful substitution by fielding Manfred Kizito in for Hegman Ngoma to take full control of the midfield that had been dominated by the Desert Hawks. Meanwhile, the final game attracted a huge Amavubi fan base from Kigali contrary to other fixtures that featured Rwanda in the two weeks tournament. The Minister of Youth, Culture and Sport, Joseph Habineza and Ferwafa president, Brig. Gen. John Bosco Kazura led the delegation. The Amavubi stars aboard Rwandair chartered plane together with more than 50 fans arrived back in Kigali last night. In the third place play-off match, Uganda Cranes defeated Burundi 2-0 to bag $ 10000 as cash prize. Hamis Kitagenda scored a brace in the 60th and 89th minutes respectively to help his side overcome the Intamba ku Rugamba of Burundi yesterday. Gateway Television (GTV) awarded the first three winning teams with cash prizes ranging from $ 30000 for the Sudan, $20000 for the Rwanda and $10000 for the Uganda respectively. Ends
