IT was reported yesterday that officials from IBUKA, the umbrella organization of Genocide survivor associations, had been arrested over alleged mismanagement of survivors’ funds. The arrested officials are accused of creating ghost beneficiaries and inflating the figures of survivors in some districts. Though the officials have to be accorded the benefit of due process, the action is timely because of persistent complaints from the public that some survivors have been denied access to the necessary support meant for them. A number of survivors live under difficult conditions, owing to the mismanagement and misallocation of resources by such officials. Thus action against anyone suspected of mismanaging genocide survivors’ funds, must be acknowledged as a step towards enforcing accountability and redressing the grievances of the survivors. As vulnerable members of the society, the survivors are supposed to be treated as a matter of priority, especially where the government has set aside a budget to address their needs. The action taken against the corrupt officials should be commended and everyone ought to be vigilant and report any anomalies in records that they may be aware of. Ends
