Commemoration period, a time to show solidarity

As we kick off the official commemoration week on Wednesday, April 7, we should bear in mind the imperative to care for those that need support during this difficult time that brings back painful memories. April is a month that brings horrific memories to Rwandans. It is during tough times such as these that solidarity will enable us come through. In our daily lives, we come encounter various misunderstandings, disagreements or even challenges. However, people’s reactions, while under duress, can be unpredictable – which is what tends to happen in the month of April. It is, therefore, our collective responsibility to be extra cautious, and be mindful of people’s feelings during the commemoration period. We should be there for each other, offering support to those who need it. The number of trauma cases increases during this period. With a show of solidarity, comforting those going through hard times, will not only help them recover, but will also reduce the rising number of the trauma cases. Sixteen years ago, Rwanda had been written off as a failed state, with people losing hope in life. However, through hard work, and good leadership, the country has not only recovered, but has also become a shining example of success on the African continent. All that Rwanda has achieved would not be possible, if divisive policies still existed. The benefit of solidarity is there for everyone to see. That said, let us keep up the spirit of togetherness, actively participating in the commemoration activities and support one another when necessary. Ends
