Nurses arrested over impersonation

RWAMAGANA – Two female nurses attached to Rwamagana Hospital have been arrested for allegedly posing as doctors, the hospital’s director confirmed. Elbert Bazataha and Jean Uwizeye allegedly posed as medical doctors whenever unsuspecting patients sought their services. “The nurses were arrested after a tip off from one of their colleagues who discovered to their amazement that the two were masquerading as registered doctors,” hospital sources said. The same source added that the nurses were motivated by the increasing demand for doctors to carry out circumcision. “Circumcision charges are up to Rwf 5000 per person, since neither RAMA nor Mutuelle de Santé health insurance is accepted,” said the source. “The nurses have been circumcising many children sponsored by Compassion International. They also handled other cases in their homes. So, for them to build confidence among clients they needed the doctor’s title.” Talking to The New Times yesterday, the hospital’s director, Dr. Claude Ndagijimana, described the duo’s conduct as a great disgrace to the medical profession.
