Ex-Gatsibo Mayor gets 8 more months in prison

NYAGATARE - The Nyagatare Intermediate Court on Friday sentenced former Gatsibo District Mayor, Jean Marie Vianney Murego, and three others, to eight months imprisonment for their role in the mismanagement of over Rwf 88m meant for the construction of Kabarore Hospital in Gatsibo district. Murego’s eight-month sentence is in addition to another 3-year-sentence he was handed by the same court over embezzling money meant for the supply of exotic cows in the district. The court said that Murego as a district Mayor, violated laws governing tendering procedures by authorizing 40 % advance payment instead of 20 % as stipulated by the law. “After court heard and verified all the merits of the case, we sentence Vianney Murego, Eugene Nkurunziza and Mediatrice Umfuyisoni to eight months in prison for violating tender procedures,” the court ruled. “The court also sentenced Dickson Kimenyi, Justin Nusu, Hyporate Ndimanyi, Clement Gatete and Yvette Dusenge to six months in prison with a fine of Rwf 100,000.’ Murego was arrested last year, together with his deputy in charge of Economic Affairs, Bossa Rwemalika and Yvette Dusenge in charge of Social Affairsand the district director of infrastructure, Dickson Kimenyi, over mismanagement of public funds.
