Poor working conditions irk ISAE lecturers

MUSANZE – Lecturers at the Institute of Science and Agriculture, ISAE Busogo, have appealed to the institute’s administration to speed up the construction of their offices and those of heads of faculties. Speaking to The Sunday Times, the lecturers also complained of the administration’s policy requiring them to be at the university even when they have no lectures. “By virtue of its poor infrastructure, ISAE has almost no office space for the academic staff, only deans and heads of departments were provided with some space in laboratories to serve as their offices,” one of the lecturers who asked not to be named for fear of retribution said. They also criticised the banning of part-time teaching.When contacted for a comment, the Rector, Dr Charles Karemangingo, explained that banning part-time teaching and introducing daily attendance were done in order to improve the quality of teaching. He added that the construction works of the administrative block had been delayed by the contractors. “It is not only about teaching and being at school, there is need to conduct research, technology transfer, including offering outreach services to the communities around,’’ tough talking Vice Rector, Patrice Hakizimana, said. He challenged all lecturers to draw up research proposals in agro-related ventures which will be funded, as a way of making extra money instead of ‘looking for little money outside.’ Ends
