Two hundred and sixty adults in Mwiri District in the Eastern Province were awarded certificates in literacy of the 24-Kinyarwanda alphabet early this week. The adults, of which eighty percent are women, were certified by Mosaic Foundation, a local NGO which fosters development through culture advancement. At the ceremony, the president and founder of Mosaic, Francois Mugabo, urged participants to continue revising what they have learnt and to join catchment class to advance their knowledge. “We want to put up a library for you so that you can access different books to develop your reading and writing skills,” Mugabo said while congratulating them upon their attendance. He said that the library will be full furnished with a Television set and different books next year. This year’s number brings the total number of educated adults in the area to 1011 since the foundation started Adult Literacy in the Community in 2004. 335 adults were certified in 2004, 235 in 2005 and 196 last year. Mugabo said that when the program was started in the district, sixty percent of the residents were alphabet-illiterate. “Mosaic is one of the 14 organisations that are delivering and we pledge to continue our partnership with them in developing the community,” said Karin, Norwegian Church Aid country Director at the function. The NGO operates under the auspices of the Norwegian church aid and works with different institutions to raises awareness on other issues like HIV/AIDS, sanitary, illegal weapons.Ends
