He walked for hours and hours before he could meet any person. He could not even see a single a house. The only thing he could see from far was the lake. Whenever he saw it he remembered the crocodile which saved him from drowning. His feet gradually led him to a road. It was getting late and he was too tired to continue walking. Aimlessly, he followed this road. After thirty minutes on this road he met two white people. He was frightened when he saw them. It was his first time to see white people. At the first sight, he thought they were the ghosts of Lake Kivu, which the teachers had told them about. Being too tired, he could not run. He was ready for anything, bad or good. They spoke to him in a friendly manner. All his fear went. His fluency in English surprised them and they seemingly became interested in knowing where he lived. “What is your name?” they asked. “My name is Joseph Gahima?” “Where do you live?” He did not answer them. Gahima bent his head to look at his feet as he remembered the money he hid in the forest near the border. They asked him again. “Joseph, feel free. Where do you live?” “I live near the border on the Rwandan side” he said. “So, you are a Rwandan?” “Yes, I am a Rwandan?” “What are you doing on the island?” they asked. He narrated his adventure to them and they pitied him. They introduced themselves as Kate and Rose from the VSO. VSO was an organisation of volunteers from foreign countries. His new friends told him they were coming from England but they stayed at Kimironko in Kigali. They were simply on the tour of the Island. Ends
