One of Kenya’s private universities; Mt. Kenya University (MKU) plans to open a coordination centre in Kigali. The institute currently has a partnership with Rwanda Tourism University College (RTUC) but it has decided to open a Kigali branch. “We will open Mt Kenya University, Rwanda this year and we have already identified where we will set the coordinating centre,” Simon Gicharu, the Chairman of the institution’s Council told The New Times. Gicharu clarified that opening up a Kigali campus has no effect on the partnership with RTUC but rather will look forward to partnering with other local institutions. “We will invest in health science and applied technology courses which may not easily work out in partnership with RTUC given their mission and vision,” he said. “As a measure to prepare secondary students for science courses, the university will have a program of training laboratory educationist from various secondary schools.” Gicharu is in the country to strengthen RTUC partnership as well look for other opportunities in the education sector they can invest.
