RRA to strengthen information network on illicit trade

To mitigate revenue loss and curb the growing of illicit trade, Rwanda Revenue Authority (RRA) officials in charge of revenue protection will this year concentrate on strengthening information network. This move follows general outcry from manufacturers within the Rwanda Private Sector Federation (PSF) about the growing illicit trade which is a major challenge to their development. In an interview with Business Times, Seth Muhirwa, the Director for Revenue Protection Department (RPD) at RRA, said that despite efforts to curb down the illicit trade including applying speed boats, RRA continues to battle with smugglers. “We have discovered that the means we applied were not bringing out the tangible smuggled goods and products and tax invaders as expected. We have streamlined working plans on the need to first establish information network in order to cease the big dealers in illicit trade and tax invaders,” Muhirwa said on Wednesday. RPD has hired experts and equipped their staff with necessary skills to investigate and prosecute criminals for participating in the illegal trade and the tax invaders. Ends
