GICUMBI- 96 classrooms and 444 school toilets in Gicumbi district are expected to be fully constructed by January 15 2010, to support the Nine Year Basic Education programme (9YBE). This was revealed to The New Times by Gicumbi District Director of Education Deogratias Mwanafunzi. “Byumba Youth Technical Institute (CFJ) has been contracted to make doors and roofing materials for the 96 classes, which are already in their completion phase,” said Mwanafunzi. The district vice Mayor for Social Affairs, Eugenie Uwamahoro, attributed the slight delay in completion of classrooms to the slow procurement of roofing materials by contractors. “The district has already secured iron sheets for 64 classes. Our problem remains the slow acquisition of doors and roofing materials from the contracted party”, she said. When contacted, the Director of Byumba CFJ, Eugene Ruzindana, said his institute intends to expedite the process by decentralising the manufacturing of the materials to be done near the schools. Ends
