After years of complaints, the Ministry of health is putting final touches to a plan to set up the national medical waste incenerator. Incineration is a waste treatment technology that involves the combustion of organic materials and substances. According to Joseph Katabarwa who heads the Hygiene and Sanitation Desk at the Ministry of Health the incenerator will cater for all the medical and chemical waste collected from all over the country. Katabarwa said that the Ministry is working on a strategic plan with the Kigali City Council to see implememntation of this project. Katabarwa also said that the government had long term plans to equip each district with an incunerator to take care of anything that cannot be recycled. “What we are looking at is an incunerator that will be processing 200 Kilograms of waste per house. That’s quite sufficient,” he said The plans to set up the national incunerator comes at the heels of complaints from Nyanza landfill where employees at the site say that the trash brought to their site is not sorted before being dumped at the site. Currently, the site employs 74 former street children who all fall under the payroll of the Kigali City Council (KCC). Ends
