Theft tops city crime list

Close to 175 cases of insecurity have so far been registered in Kigali city since the beginning of this month, with theft topping the list accounting for 76 cases. According to reports from the three districts of Gasabo, Nyarugenge and Kicukiro presented yesterday during Kigali City security meeting held at Nyarugenge district headquarters, 44 cases of fighting that at times resulted into serious injuries were also recorded. Twenty nine cases of drug abuse were also reported while defilement and rape registered 15 cases. Only five accidents were registered, all in Nyarugenge. About nine motorcycle taxies were also stolen in the same month seven of them from Gasabo. Nyarugenge topped the crime list with 89 cases registered. Gasabo came second with 53 cases while Kicukiro had 33. Kimisagara sector in Nyarugenge District is the most insecure area in Kigali with almost all the crimes in the district registered in this area. Brig. Gen. Dan Gapfizi, commander of the 211 Brigade that oversees Nyamata and Kigali City called for tougher measures to deal with insecurity not only in during the festive season but also days after. He singled out the expropriated areas of lower Kiyovu, former police headquarters in Muhima and section of Kibagabaga close to tennis club that remain undeveloped and where many people have complained of theft in the night hours. “The developers should either provide security for these places or utilize it because these places are posing insecurity because they have become a den of criminals,” Gapfizi told the meeting. The meeting was chaired by City Mayor Aisa Kirabo Kacyira.It was agreed during the meeting that developers of these areas who include Social Security Fund of Rwanda (SSFR) should ensure their security at least within the next two days or other measures be taken. Meanwhile, the security meeting which was also attended by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Sharon Habba set January 15 as the day to officially unveil all the classrooms constructed under Nine Year Basic Education (9YBE) programmee in Kigali city.
