The national basketball team has started preparations for the fourth edition of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) 3x3 Africa Cup tournament slated for December 2-4 in Cairo, Egypt. 3x3 basketball is a variation of basketball played on a “three-a-side” basis, with one backboard and a half-court setup. On Friday, November 25, Moise Mutokambali, the head coach of the 3x3 national basketball team, announced a six-player provisional squad to start training ahead of the showpiece. The squad includes Olivier Turatsinze (point-guard, IPRC-Kigali), Patrick Ngabonziza (power forward, APR), Steven Hagumintwari (shooting guard, Patriots), Justin Uwitonze (shooting guard IPRC-Kigali), Dieudonné Ndizeye (small forward, Patriots) and Jean Jacques Wilson Nshobozwabyosenumukiza (point guard, APR). The continental tournament will attract eight teams organised in two Groups: A and B. Rwanda is in Group A which comprises Madagascar, Egypt and Botswana. Group B has Kenya, Tunisia, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Morocco. The 3x3 national basketball team will hold two training sessions daily at IPRC-Kigali, and is expected to travel to Cairo on November 30.
