RUHANGO – The National Unity and Reconciliation Commission (NURC) has commended residents of Mwendo sector in Ruhango district for their efforts to restore unity. Jean Baptiste Habyarimana, the executive secretary of NURC, said that Mwendo residents have quickly responded to the unity and reconciliation drives compared to other parts of the country. “This community was deeply affected by genocide and insecurity, but has been able to overcome the past through combined efforts and participation in community developmental activities,” he said. “This is an example to other communities and NURC is proud of it.” The NURC boss was on Thursday addressing residents during the launch of the national unity and reconciliation week in Ruhango district. The function was attended by Ruhango mayor Célestin Twagirumukiza, who also lauded the residents for working towards unity and hard work. During the function, residents highlighted their achievements in rebuilding the community after genocide - Agriculture, environmental protection activities, sharing livestock, health insurance and education. They noted that the establishment of unity and reconciliation associations and cooperatives has restored harmony and co-existence. The associations members also pledged to increase efforts of educating other communities, supporting the poor families and participation in development programmes. Ends
