DFID regional chief in Rwanda

The Director for East and Central Africa in the UK Department for International Development (DFID), Joy Hutcheon, is in the country for a two-day visit. Hutcheon is expected to meet senior government officials particularly those in charge of education, finance and economic planning. She is also expected to tour DFID funded programmes to asses achievements made through the UK- Rwanda development partnership. Hutcheon yesterday attended a DFID funded study on the economics of climate change in Rwanda that will assess the impacts and economic costs of climate change; the costs of adaptation; and to recommend strategic directions for low carbon growth. On her final day in the country, the DFID head will visit Goupe Scolaire de Butamwa, Mageragere sector in Nyarugenge district to view Rwanda’s progress in achieving Universal Primary Education. According to the officials, the bilateral programme has provided over £400 million to Rwanda in the past 10 years. It currently provides bilateral assistance worth £46 million each year, of which £31 million is provided as direct support to the budget. The focus of UK bilateral assistance is on poverty reduction, with a specific contribution to growth, education, health, and governance. Ends
