Refugees to get IDs cards

All refugees sheltered in the country will soon get refugee cards for easy identification, a senior government official said yesterday. Innocent Ngango, the executive secretary of the National Commission for Refugees revealed this yesterday during the ministry of Local Government’s evaluation of this year’s performance contract with institutions attached to the ministry. Currently, Rwanda shelters about 54,200 refugees mainly from Democratic Republic of Congo nationals and Burundi. As people with a right to movement, Ngango said that this will help the government to monitor them closely. The absence of these IDs had been a great concern to the refugees who were unable to travel outside their camps. The evaluation exercise presided over by the Local government minister, Christopher Bazivamo brought together close to eight institutions that included Community Development Fund (CDF), Fund for Genocide Survivors (FARG) and Rwanda Demobilisation and Reintegration Commission (RDRC) The evaluation report from CDF shows that over Rwf 3.1 bn has been spent in the last three months to support about 660 development projects across the country. The funds were spent in the construction of roads, markets and water. It also spent over Rwf 639 million to support Vision Umurenge Programmee. It was revealed in the same meeting that close to 400,000 national IDs are still at sectors across the country. Pascal Nyamurinda, the national ID coordinator said that the owners have either not reported to collect them or the leaders have not give the exercise value. Bazivamo who said that the ministry achieved almost all its targets in this year and urged staff of the ministry to stay on course in order to achieve the vision of the government. He cautioned leaders most especially at the local government level on the misuse of public funds. “There have been many cases related to corruption at this level. Leaders should desist from this act because it affects the development of the country.” he said Ends
