New holiday ‘gahunda’

Finally the holidays are here. After months at school, our brothers and sisters have all the free time to enjoy and do the things they missed while at school. For those in boarding schools it was even more exciting to see their parents, relatives and friends. Alex Byamugisha a Senior One student at Riviera Secondary School in Kabuga says that holidays are a time to relax after spending months at school. “I believe this time is for us to relax at home since we spend a long period of time at school concentrating on studies,” Byamugisha said. However, he noted that although it is time to relax, it does not mean giving up on books. “I must allocate some time to revise my books so that I keep updated as a student,” Byamugisha said. Holidays are also a time for students to make plans about the things they are interested in. Every teen wants to spend their holidays in an exceptional way. Ngabire Alice in Senior Three at St. Andre Secondary School in Nyamirambo says, “There must be a difference between school days and holidays.” She said she always makes an effort to interact with other students from different schools. “This interaction allows me to learn a lot from the new people I meet,” Ngabire said. She believes that fellow holiday makers need to utilize their time by learning to interact so that they can fit in society. Although holidays give students a lot of free time, it is necessary to utilize time in a productive way. Vivian Bizima, a mother of three said students should enjoy the holidays but parents have to take a closer look at how their sons and daughters spend their time. “It’s exciting to interact with other holidays makers but anything can happen. Students may decide to engage in various activities, some of which are wrong. Parents should at least find time to know what their children are doing,” Bizima said. She agrees that some parents spend most of their time working, and ignore the importance of their role in the proper up-bringing of children. Ends
