City roads renamed

KIGALI - Premier Bernard Makuza renamed two Kigali City roads on Thursday as a six-month road-and-street naming exercise got underway. City authorities are re-naming a number of roads and streets as part of Kigali’s centenary celebrations, which climax tomorrow.The roads renamed on Thursday are the one stretching from Kigali International Airport to Kimihurura roundabout and the other from Prince House junction near Giporoso in Remera to the city centre.Prince House junction to Kigali City centre main roundabout is now Africa Union Boulevard while Kigali International Airport to Kimuhurura roundabout near KBC is Kigali International Airport Boulevard. Makuza remarked that many roads in the city have names which are not in the spirit of national unity and reconciliation, as well as the country’s vision and aspirations.“Some names of our roads are a reflection of our bad history,” he said during a function held at Prince House in Remera.He said well named roads are characteristic of organised cities and important in guiding visitors to their destinations.He praised the business community for welcoming and making good use of the recently launched ‘24-hour Business Street.’“When business is done for longer hours, it economically benefits the seller and the consumer,” the Premier said.Kigali City vice mayor in charge of Finance and Economic Development, Diedonne Rumaragishyika said that more roads and streets would be named in the city. The ceremony was attended by Kampala City Mayor Alhajji Nasser Ntege Sebagala as well as other mayors from Burundi, Malawi, Zambia and Cameroon. Ends
