The top Rwandan genocide suspect who was arrested on Monday from a hotel in Kampala had been tracked -down by Police operatives at the Interpol Secretariat in Lyon, France, it has emerged. According to a secret police document from Interpol to the Inspector General of Police, Mr Idelphonse Nizeyimana, was arrested by two Interpol operatives with the help of their Ugandan counterparts. The two agents, Mr Albert Toch-Martin and Mr Pierre Duclos, from Interpol general secretariat arrived in the country on the same day Mr Nizeyimana entered Uganda from Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), where he has been staying with his family. On Friday, Interpol in France sent a message to the national central bureau of Interpol in Kampala that a delegation that was later to arrest Mr Nizeyimana would arrive in Uganda the next day. Mr Nizeyimana who has been using a pseudo name, Hitimana Kabogo entered Uganda using a fake travel document from the DRC and travelled by bus from Bunagana border post to Kampala. The Police spokesperson, Judith Nabakooba said, “He entered the country on Friday and travelled to Kampala disguised as Hitimana Kabogo.” According to Police sources, the Interpol team was received by the deputy boss of Interpol Uganda, Mr Elly Womanya. On arrival, the team requested for an operative to work with them in the operation to arrest the man who allegedly participated in the killing of many ethnic Tutsis - including the much-revered queen, Rosalie Gicanda, the widow of King Mutara III. On Saturday, the combined team of Interpol operatives had a meeting with a senior detective attached to Interpol, Uganda. The investigative officer, who has requested to remain anonymous because of the sensitivity of the matter, was appointed head of the operation to arrest the former Intelligence and military operations commander, who is accused of setting special military units to carry out genocide. Mr Nizeyimana arrived at Exotic Inn Hotel on Musajja Alumbwa Road in Rubaga Division, Kampala, which Ms Nabakooba said, has been used before by criminals from DRC, Rwanda and Tanzania. Nabakooba said after he was arrested, Mr Nizeyimana was taken to Jinja Road Police Station where he spent a night. He was flown to the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda in Arusha, Tanzania, yesterday in a UN chartered plane. Rwanda Defence Forces spokesperson Jill Rutaremara yesterday said Mr Nizeyimana’s arrest was ‘a welcome relief’. “He is known for his involvement in the Genocide, so Interpol did a tremendous job in apprehending him,” he said yesterday.
