Police destroy illicit drugs worth Rwf 6.6m

The Rwanda National Police has vowed to crackdown on criminals during the ongoing countrywide operation to nab law breakers. According to the Police Spokesperson, Supt. Eric Kayiranga, the hunt is on to have all those dealing in the illegal trade of illicit brew, locally known as Kanyanga, and illegal substances such as marijuana as well as counterfeits. “The routine operations are on; we are seriously cracking down on crimes, especially trade in illicit brew and drugs. As I speak, on Monday we destroyed illicit brew and Cannabis worth over Rwf 6.6m in Kicukiro District. Similar operations are taking place countrywide.” Kayiranga said. Night patrols around the city have also been intensified to curb nocturnal criminals while the hunt for counterfeit products has also been intensified. According to Police, crimes related to production of counterfeit products and money as well as forgery of academic documents and have been on the rise. The force is working with Rwanda Bureau of Standards (RBS) to crack the whip on producers of fake products. “Most of these crimes, especially trade in illicit substances, are cross-border and we are working with neighbouring countries to tackle these problems. We have also intensified border patrols to monitor individuals who smuggle in such products.” said the Police Spokesperson. According to Police, Rwanda has the least homicide cases in the region, thanks to improved security operations. In a related development the individuals accused of hurling a grenade in a crowded market in Ruhango District will be aligned before the courts of law to answer charges of murder. 4 people were killed while over 40 were injured during the incident. The file is currently being handled by the prosecution. Ends
