Company restructures prepaid billing tariffs

Rwandatel, has restructured its prepaid billing tariffs for calls and Short Messages (SMS) across local networks.The new billing structure now includes per minute tariffs alongside per second rates that was rolled out when company switched to GSM technology. The company’s Corporate Communications Manager, Cleophas Kabasiita said that the changes aim at offering clients with alternatives. “One can either go for per second billing or per minute billing. But it also makes business sense for us,” she explained. An SMS to Rwandatel has reduced from Rwf20 to Rwf15 while the same SMS to MTN has increased from Rwf20 to Rwf25. The new billing structure has also seen the call cost which was previously billed at Rwf15 per minute scrapped. The cost of a calling another local network per minute has increased. The total cost for a minute has been increased to Rwf130 unlike the Rwf80 that was charged before. Kabasiita also said that the new restructuring includes, peak and off peak hours for voice calls. The off peak hours are between 9 to 8 am from Monday to Friday. However, there are no discounts for calls to other networks during this range of time. Rwandatel owes MTN Rwanda over Rwf2 billion in outstanding payments from interconnection fees. The interconnection fees are about Rwf40 for every call made amongst telecom companies. A recent statement from MTN stated that the arrears dating back to 2008 are expected to be settled amicably. Ends
