GATSIBO – Care International’s officer in charge of family planning, Yvonne Uwimana has said ignorance and alcoholism among residents are the main hindrances to family planning campaigns, in Gatsibo District. Uwimana made the remarks on Thursday in an interview with The New Times, shortly after commissioning a family planning outlet in Kizuguro, Gatsibo. She said the barriers have been revealed in a survey conducted by different health officials in the district. “Residents are ignorant of family planning practices. We came to know about these challenges after carrying out a survey and this initiative we have developed is crucial to redressing this situation. We hope that the number of people using family planning will from today increase,” she said. Claudine Nyiramutsinzi, one of the residents said that for the last three years she has had unplanned pregnancies due to lack of knowledge about family planning. “I am a mother of seven but I unwillingly produced the last three children because I was not aware of the family planning methods which could assist me,” she said.
