One Dollar campaign launched in Uganda

Members of the Rwandan Diaspora in Uganda launched a ‘One Dollar Campaign’ charity initiative yesterday in Kampala that will see Diaspora members mobilise a symbolic one dollar each to raise money to provide shelter for Genocide survivors in different parts of Rwanda. The event organised by the Uganda-Banyarwanda Cultural Development Association, commonly known as UMUBANO, raised over Rwf 1.3 million on the first day of the campaignThe launch was attended by the members of the Rwandan embassy in Uganda and wellwishers. Speaking to The New Times, Frank Rusanganwa, the chief organizer of the One Dollar campaign in Uganda, said that we are registering success because there has been an element of ownership of the idea by the Rwandans living here. “We are planning for a massive campaign at the end of this month so that we can raise more money,” said Rusanganwa. Rwanda’s First Councillor in Uganda, Daniel Mutezintare, thanked the participants for their efforts in the one dollar campaign. The chairman of the Uganda Banyarwanda Cultural Development association, Donald Kananura, hailed the Rwandan Diaspora in Uganda for being supportive and urged them to spread the message accross Uganda. The campaign was launched in April as an initiative by the Rwanda Diaspora Group Network but later, Rwandans from within joined the efforts to get shelter for the orphans who have not had a home since the Genocide ended 15 years ago.
